Lactation Consultant
How do I know I need a
Lactation Consultant?

If breastfeeding is painful, there is difficulty with latch, baby is not gaining enough weight, milk production is a concern, feedings are difficult or long, or there are other issues, the assistance of a lactation consultant can be very helpful. A lactation consultant can find the root issue, provide research based information, assistance with latch, strategies to help and make a plan to move forward. Milk supply is established in the first two weeks by how much milk the baby is removing from the breast. Every day is critical during that window of time and, if the baby is not getting enough milk to keep your milk production up, temporary pumping is important. It is best to get help as soon as possible and pump after nursing to ensure you keep up your milk production until issues can be addressed.
Home Visits and Office
I offer appointments in your home or in my comfortable, private home office in Northern Dorchester county, Maryland.
I serve many counties on Maryland's Eastern shore such as Dorchester, Talbot, Caroline, Wicomico, Queen Anne, Kent, Worchester and other counties.
I also travel to counties in Delaware.
Appointments

What happens during an appointment?

It usually lasts 1 1/2- 3 hours. I will do an assessment for mother and baby to focus on issues that may affect breastfeeding. I take time to listen to your breastfeeding concerns and story. The baby will be weighed on a digital scale before and after a feeding to find out exact milk intake. Usually, a full feeding will be observed. I will offer assistance with baby's positioning and latch to provide the most comfort for mom and baby. Instruction on pump use, fitting, milk storage and hand expression is provided, as needed. A care plan will be made to meet the needs of mom and baby. I will follow up by phone. If needed, follow up appointments can be made.
I also offer prenatal breastfeeding classes

Insurance and Payments
Through the Lactation Network, direct billing of insurance is available if they take your insurance. If so, 6 visits with me will be covered at no cost to you. Click the Lactation Network Link below to see if your insurance is covered. If they do not bill your insurance, I accept payment out of pocket and will provide a receipt with insurance codes and some providers reimburse. I also take medical flex account cards, credit and debit cards, checks, cash, etc. Discounts are offered based on income and I accept payment plans if needed. I believe every mother deserves breastfeeding help and will work with you to give you the assistance you need, regardless of income.
